The Vadakkumnathan temple and the Thekkinkadu maidan - the ground where the pooram is hosted, and the Nehru Park come together as a trio of attractions right at the center of Thrissur city, making it a popular hangout among people. The temple, a UNESCO-certified symbol of traditional Kerala architecture seems to be located at the right place, encircled by the Thekkinkadu Maidan with the Swaraj round forming yet another border. It is from here that the city originates, the roads branching out into nine.
The iconic and vibrant Thrissur Pooram cultural festival which happens on the premises of the Vadakkumnathan temple brings an amazing crowd of enthusiasts to Thekkinkadu Maidan every year. The forest of teak trees, aka Thekkinkadu is how the maidan derives its name. It now has a tree map which shows the number of trees standing at 661. The canopy is considered the city’s green lungs. Nehru Park also attracts many segments of people, especially families as there are plenty of rides, a children’s library, cycling, a lovely garden and a fountain show in the evenings.
