Kerala Kalamandalam

Thrissur's Kerala Kalamandalam remains the nucleus of the state's cultural centre.

It is situated in the northern fringe of Thrissur district, Cheruthuruthy, at about 56 km away from the city centre. Established by the renowned poet Vallathol Narayana Menon in the year 1930, Kalamandalam has an eternal legacy in the cultural map of the world. This prestigious institution pioneered training in classical performing arts, which was under the patronage of provincial kings and landlords until then. The serene environs of the Kalamandalam campus echoes the glory of our illustrious art forms.

Perhaps the major attraction for a visitor at Kalamandalam would be the Koothambalam or the traditional dance theatre, which is built outside the temple complex, contradictory to the conventional method. As the magnificent academy marches on to its centenary, the one thing that remains unhinged is the preservation of moral and traditional stimulants imbibed within the structure that makes it unbeatable in the art and cultural discipline.
