The wildlife sanctuary is situated on the Western domains of the Nelliyampathy Hills and is home to several endemic and endangered species. Chimmini is located roughly around 25 km away from Palapilly. You can reach Chimmini by taking the Palapilly road on the Ernakulam-Thrissur national highway. The dam across the Chimmini river offers a magnificent view. As you drive through the forest area, you will be able to witness a belt of rubber trees on either side of the road. The Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary is situated around the dam and has an office at Echipara.
Only those with an entry pass are allowed into the forest. The forest department’s office lies next to the dam and a dormitory in its vicinity offers affordable accommodation for sightseers. If you have some extra time to spare, then you shouldn't miss the trek to the enticing Choorathala waterfalls, which is just a few metres away from Chimmini. There are no specific time slots set for trekking so the distance can be tweaked based on the convenience of visitors. The fee for a three-member team is Rs.600. Each extra person has to pay Rs. 200 and a team can have a maximum of 10 people.
